There are no plans for a new Wii, but Nintendo’s DSi is expected in the U.S. late next year.
Well that rumor was short-lived. Less than a week ago, we heard grumblings about the next version of Nintendo’s Wii, better known as the “HD Wii” or “Wii HD.”
You can call it whatever you want, because sadly, those rumors were nothing more than just that. In an interview with VentureBeat, Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime denied any such product. “It’s pure rumor and speculation,” he said. “I find it disappointing that it’s being reported as fact by a number of online outlets.” He also wouldn’t confirm rumors that some type of new Wii prototype was floating around.
Well, the rumor mill did get one this right: Nintendo is planning a new handheld, the DSi. Announced late last week, the DSi will include a 0.3-megapixel camera, a second VGA camera located on the hinge (facing the player), twin screens that are 3.25 inches each, and an SD card slot. There’s no exact release date, but the $179 unit is expected to hit the U.S. in late 2009.
