Since it was first announced, the Nest Learning Thermostat has certainly created a lot of buzz—probably more than we’ve ever seen on any other thermostat. Well now, Nest Labs is making that popular product even better.
The company just announced the next-generation Nest thermostat, which is 20 percent slimmer and boasts compatibility with 95 percent of low-voltage residential heating and cooling systems.
The new Nest also has a new stainless steel ring, which is designed to blend into any decor even more effectively. Other features include support for two-stage cooling, three-stage heating, and emergency heat for heat pumps, as well as whole-home humidifiers and dehumidifiers.
Another new perk is the release of Nest’s version 3.0 software. That includes custom features via System Match, as well as Early On options to get your house to the temperature you want, when you want it. The software also has options for radiant systems and heat pumps, as well as better mobile support, better “away” features, and additional languages.
“In the past year, we’ve accomplished a number of notable milestones, from having Nest thermostats connected—and saving money and energy—in every U.S. state and across Canada to achieving best-seller status at Lowe’s, Amazon and Apple’s online store,” said Tony Fadell, Nest’s founder and chief executive officer. “Our mission is to keep people comfortable in their homes while helping them save energy, and with the next-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, we’re able to spread that comfort and savings to even more homes—and to help higher-efficiency systems perform the way they were meant to.”
The original Nest is still selling for $229, while supplies last. The company has started taking pre-orders for the second-generation Nest Learning Thermostat for $249, with plans to ship in mid-October. Nest Software 3.0 is now available to existing customers.
