Talk about timing. Hot on the heels of the announcement that Comcast and Time Warner Cable would soon be merging, Netgear is debuting a pair of new cable modem routers.
Once that merger goes through, subscribers will probably be looking for ways to cut down on fees—any fees. Of course, many of you are looking to do that right now. Buying a modem versus renting is an easy way to cut costs. The new N600 Dual-Band WiFi Cable Modem Router (C3700) is selling now for $129.99, with the N300 WiFi Cable Modem Router (C3000) priced at $99.99.
Each of the new devices combines a Data Over Cable Services Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 3.0 cable modem and a high-speed 802.11n WiFi router together under one chassis. That CableLabs-certified DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem promises super-fast data speeds. The N300 can do Wi-Fi speeds up to 300Mbps on the 2.4GHz band, with the N600 offering dual-band networking with speeds up to 300Mbps on the 2.4 and 5GHz bands. Both also promise to support eight download and four upload channels simultaneously, which is perfect for HD streaming and gaming.
Another interesting feature is that both routers will work with Netgear’s genie app. This allows users to install, monitor, control and repair your home network from PCs and Macs, as well as iOS and Android devices. The app also allows for guest access and parental controls.
Other features include MyMedia for media playback, a ReadySHARE-enabled USB port, and Gigabit Ethernet ports.
“Netgear believes in offering a broad range of technology options for your home network so you can choose the one that best suits your needs,” said Sandeep Harpalani, Netgear’s director of product marketing for retail networking products. “To that end, we are expanding our portfolio of cable products to meet the requirements of the fast-growing cable Internet market. Our new cable modem routers integrate the latest DOCSIS 3.0 cable technology with the superior ease-of-use capabilities that you’ve come to expect in Netgear routers, thanks to the Netgear genie app. By owning one of our new cable modem routers, you have an easy option for avoiding your cable provider’s monthly modem leasing fee.”
The N600 and N300 are joining Netgear’s other modem offerings, including the N450 WiFi Cable Modem Router ($119.99) and the CMD31T DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem ($69.99). The company also plans to release the AC1750 WiFi Cable Modem Router (C6300) sometime in the second quarter of this year $219.99. First announced back in January, this model combines four Gigabit Ethernet ports and support for 16 download and four upload channels simultaneously, with modem speeds of up to 680 Mbps with Gigabit WiFi speeds of up to 1750 Mbps (450+1300 Mbps).
