Netgear Puts More Out for Powerline Fans
The company just started shipping two networking sets -- with one for high-def.
November 17, 2008 | by Rachel Cericola

Broadband in every room shouldn’t be a luxury. OK—it’s not a right either. Still, if you’ve got outlets and around $150 burning a hole in your pocket, Netgear can make your multi-room digital dreams come true.

The company just announced they are now shipping two powerline adapter kits: the Powerline HD Plus Ethernet Adapter Kit (HDXB111) and the Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (XAVB101). Each one is designed to deliver plug-and-play access to broadband, without the need for additional wiring.

Pictured to the left in all of its glory is the UPA-based HDXB111. The XAVB101 is based on the HomePlug AV standard. Both boast high-speed connections of up to 200 Mbps, which should get you some decent audio, video, VoIP calling, and good old-fashioned web surfing. The HD version also promises HD streaming, as well as built-in power sockets so you won’t hog every available outlet in the house.

Of course, many worry about powerline performance. However, I’ve used powerline plenty of times; never had one problem—and there’s no way my Money-Pit-styled house has superhero-caliber house wire.

Both make for a nice gift, and can be had now. The XAVB101 ($149.99) kit has two adapters, along with everything else you need to get going. The HDXB111 kit has two HD Plus adapters with all of the connection goodies for $20 more.
