Netgear Plugs New Powerline Switch
The HomePlug AV-certified XAVE1004 promises 200Mbps off your existing powerlines.
January 07, 2009 | by Rachel Cericola

Not everyone has whole-house web access. Sure, it’s easy enough to add some wireless access. However, that task pales in comparison to plugging something into one of your existing outlets. That’s pretty much how the new Netgear XAVE1004 4-port Ethernet switch works.

This newly announced HomePlug AV-certified device promises cool speeds of up to 200Mbps, all via your existing powerlines—and Netgear’s little switch kit, of course. Netgear says this should allow you to game, stream video and shower, all in the same room (if that’s your master plan).

Other features include “wake-on-activity” functionality, multicolored LEDs, mounting possibilities, and an easy setup. Tech specs include:

  • HomePlug AV Certified (can be used with any existing HomePlug AV network)
  • 200 Mbps PHY Rate
  • Bandwidth – 2 to 30MHz
  • QOS – TDMA, CSMA (8)
  • Modulation – 1024 QAM
  • IGMP Snooping
  • 128-Bit AES Encryption (via software or push-to-secure)

The hardware will cost you $119. However, stretching out in the bedroom or on the deck, with the power of the web, is truly priceless.
