TiVo will stream movies and music from Netflix
October 30, 2008 | by Arlen Schweiger

It seems like every day now we’re writing about Netflix extending its reach by streaming its “Watch Instantly” movie and TV catalog to another device. Yesterday it was HD Netflix to Xbox. Today, it’s Netflix and TiVo announcing that you’ll be able to stream movies and TV episodes from the rental service to the ubiquitous DVR box.

The companies said the service will start today in a limited manner, with a wider rollout in early December, in time for you to watch plenty of Netflix movies on your TiVo boxes over the holiday vacation. The Netflix streaming service is available to its subscribers who have the unlimited rentals per month, and for TiVo subscribers who have TiVo Series3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HD XL.

The announcement adds to Netflix’s stream-to-box arsenal that includes the Roku player and Blu-ray players from LG and Samsung.

For TiVo subscribers, the 12,000-plus movies is another nugget in a goldmine that already lets you rent or buy thousands of movies from places like Amazon, CinemaNow and Jaman. And, oh yeah, that’s in addition to the stuff you actually record on your TiVo box.

Read the entire press release here. Can’t wait to see what Netflix has in store for us tomorrow!

I understand the timing of this, now that the Netflix WatchNow catalog has finally begun to mature.  This is a great addition to an already great box that is also morphing into a home network media streamer thanks to the work of the pyTivo community.

The next step is going to be HD Netflix WatchNow… we know the content will be arriving (from the xBox 360 announcement) and we know the TivoHD / Series 3 hardware is capable (it supports HD h.264 decoding though it hasn’t been activated yet)... I think it’s only a matter of time.  I’m guessing Netflix is using the xBox 360 crowd as the test for HD content distribution as they build the infrastructure to support its roll-out on other capable devices.
