Netflix Officially Launches Streaming-Only Option in the U.S.
Depending on your plan, you can expect to see at least a $1 fee increase for 2011 -- if you want to keep the DVDs coming.

We’ve been waiting for Netflix to launch a streaming-only option in the U.S. Now we have official word, and well, we’re sort of meh on the whole idea. Why? Because of the rate increase.

If you want to receive streaming-only Netflix, it will only cost you $7.99, which matches Canadian pricing—as well as pricing for the recently launched Hulu Plus service. However, if you still want to get the good, old disc, expect to pay at least a buck more.

In an email sent to subscribers, Netflix said: “Why the changes? Our selection of TV episodes and movies available to stream has grown dramatically, and as a result most members want us to deliver unlimited movies and TV episodes two ways: streaming instantly over the internet plus DVDs by mail. The price change will allow us to continue to offer the popular plan choice of unlimited TV episodes and movies streaming instantly along with unlimited DVDs. The new plan, which does not include DVDs, is a great option for the increasing number of members who only want to watch instantly. The $7.99 a month price reflects no DVD shipping costs on this plan.”

Subscribers receiving one or two titles at a time will see a $1 increase, assuming you want to keep getting that DVD (or Blu-ray). Other subscription fees have a much higher increase. See the chart below for a comparison between the old and new pricing structure.

As far as what you can stream, well… that hasn’t changed. Every title isn’t available for streaming, which means you might want to pay the extra buck or at least make sure your library card is up to date.
