We all know who won the format war. Still, a little defeat wasn’t keeping HD DVD users from putting that player into their daily/weekly rotation. Well, if that routine included getting movies from Netflix, we’ve got a wrench for you.

The company said earlier this year that it would stop buying titles. Now they don’t want to ship them either. As of December 15, subscribers will no longer be able to rent HD DVDs via Netflix.

Netflix sent out an email stating that, “At that time, we will automatically replace any HD DVD titles in your Queue with standard DVDs when available. You don’t have to do anything.” How about weep openly?

Maybe not. Still, if you were hoping to use Netflix castoffs to add to your collection, think again. The online rental service recently said it would cease selling DVDs by the end of this month. Don’t start scrambling, either. I’m not sure they ever sold high-def titles (anyone?), and couldn’t find any current remnants on their site.
