Sharp Aquos is sponsoring a September NASCAR race

NASCAR has become one of the most widely viewed sports in America, so it seems like a natural fit that one of its races be sponsored by ... a TV manufacturer. The Nextel Cup’s Labor Day weekend race at California Speedway will now be called the Sharp Aquos 500, and will be run on Sunday, Sept. 2.

NASCAR’s agreement is with Sharp Electronics and 3M Company. Another electronics company sponsors an April race at Texas Motor Speedway—the Samsung 500.

The move is the latest for Sharp in embracing sports in its marketing campaign. A TV commercial that debuted last fall featured golf, and the company is currently running a promotion as a Major League Baseball sponsor.
