Its decor may be reminiscent of the 1950s, but this spacious master bathroom boasts some modern conveniences, including his and hers flat-panel TVs, a distributed music system and a sleek touchbutton control pad on the wall.

The technology complements the luxurious design by giving the homeowners plenty of reason to soak just a little longer in the elegant claw-footed tub or enjoy some pampering at the vanity. The home systems designers at Audio Video Excellence of Pleasantville, NY, outfitted the bathroom with a pair of Sony 15-inch LCD TVs. The sets are hooked up to a Crestron video switch, which gives them access to remotely located cable TV receivers and DVD players. Each TV has its own remote, giving both viewers access to whatever they want.

“He can catch the news in the morning while she tunes to the weather channel, for instance,” says Audio Video Excellence technician Frank Palazzetti. Her TV was mounted to the wall with an Omnimount bracket so that the screen could be swiveled to face any direction. It can be aimed toward the tub, shower or dressing area so that she never misses a second of her show. His TV, meanwhile, simply sits on the counter positioned perfectly for viewing from his sink and mirror.

Music can also be piped into the bathroom by simply pressing a button on a Crestron keypad mounted near the entrance of the room. The homeowners can choose from an Elan dual tuner, which combines two independent AM/FM tuners; a Marantz CD changer; or a Hughes high-definition satellite receiver. They can also summon audio from a DVD they might have been watching in the master bedroom. The music drifts into the space from a pair of moisture-resistant Paradigm speakers mounted in the ceiling. With an assortment of music and video at their fingertips, the homeowners feel like royalty every time they comb their hair or brush their teeth.
