MTV revolutionized the music industry 27 years ago by bringing music videos to our TVs. Now the network’s mainly gone to reality TV, but its vast music video library is finding itself right at home in today’s online video world.

Yesterday MTV launched MTvM—MTVMusic.com—where you’ll be able to freely watch 16,000 videos, classic and new, with more being added every day.

I did a quick browse by artist, and found 161 artists listed under the letter K. Of course you can also type in the artist or song to find what you’re looking for—which might be preferred, because from what I saw, scrolling through the alphabetical listings isn’t as intuitive as you’d think. Individual artists are grouped alphabetically by their last name, then listed within each letter alphabetically by first name—with lumped groupings of bands by the first letter, and then later for all of them that begin with “The,” which itself could be a guessing game. Case in point, take “G” and its 203 artists—it starts with Adam Gontier, then onto performers like David Gray, then to Genesis and Gin Blossoms, to Lou Gramm and Macy Gray before you get to The Go-Go’s or The Grateful Dead. You get the idea.

Anyway, the mere prospect of this website is sweet. It also includes other video clips, like interviews and performances from exclusive MTV footage, notes Ars Technica.

There are also categories like Most Viewed, Top-Rated, Featured and Vintage Videos, and you can check out who else is watching, you know with that whole social media thing. Personally I’m looking forward to checking out “Video Killed the Radio Star,” “Once In a Lifetime,” “Hot for Teacher,” “Thriller” and other nostalgic bits from the early days.
