Gotta admit, I’m a bit biased when it comes to today’s news from Netflix.
The video rental giant has been extending its reach everywhere lately with its “Watch Instantly” streaming service. We hadn’t heard much on additional content to the library of “12,000-plus” movies and TV titles lately, though, but Netflix extended that reach today.
The company has announced that it’ll be adding content from ABC, as part of its partnership with Disney.
That includes the first five complete seasons of the mind-bending drama “Lost,” which conveniently my wife and I had just finished watching the end of Season 2 over the weekend on Blu-ray. Advanced copies of Seasons 1 and 2 on Blu-ray had come to our office, and we took the plunge having never seen a minute of the show (though we heard plenty of the buzz) in prime time.
Of course, DVD (or in this case, especially, Blu-ray) was a great way to watch “Lost,” but Season 3 on Blu-ray isn’t due out until later this year—too close to when the final season will begin airing on ABC. So DVD was going to be the way to go, but we didn’t have a Netflix account. Now we’ll be able to sign up for Netflix tonight and begin watching Season 3 a few minutes later, streamed on LG’s latest Netflix-slingin’ Blu-ray player, the BD390.
Look for “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Desperate Housewives” and more on the streaming service, whose addition of ABC began on August 1.
CNET wonders what effect this might have on iTunes sales of ABC TV episodes, seeing as how Steve Jobs sits on Disney’s board. We’re also wondering if you still go to the iTunes store with the likes of Hulu out there, and now Netflix, offering plenty of broadcast network content, or did you snatch up a Netflix subscription as more TV has been added?
