Back in the day, when you wanted music in a certain part of the house, you needed to drag out the boombox. Now, Monitor Audio is looking to put boom into any room—and that box in the closet.

The company just started shipping the WS100 wireless audio system. The setup includes two 5-inch cube speakers, each with amps and a wireless receiver on-board. Each one is designed to deliver sound anywhere in the home, without the need for being tethered to a big audio system.

Just position the speakers where you want them, plug in the included USB transmitter, and start streaming. Monitor Audio says that the system can play CD-quality sound, all without wires. It’s perfect for playing all of that music that you’ve amassed on your desktop or laptop computers. It also works with smartphones or tablets, via the set’s 3.5mm mini-jack input and an additional ultra-compact dongle (sold separately).

Each of the speakers features custom-designed tweeters and mid-bass drivers based on the company’s proprietary C-CAM transducers used by Monitor Audio’s flagship hi-fi speakers. Operating in the 2.4GHz band, the system also has SKAA wireless technology, Walking Frequency Diversity (WFD) technology, and a remote.

Monitor Audio says that users can pair up to four WS100 systems at once, for audio from up to four sources. The WS100 is shipping now, with an MSRP of $399 per pair.
