Here’s yet another twist on new energy monitoring applications. Blue Line Innovations, maker of the inexpensive PowerCost Monitor, has announced its new PowerCost Monitor WiFi Gateway that can send real-time energy data to Microsoft’s Hohm online home energy analysis application.
The PowerCost monitor attaches to a home’s power meter to wirelessly transmit power usage data to a small display. Hohm is an online application that enables consumers to analyze their energy usage, provide energy saving recommendations and the ability to benchmark your personal results with other communities and group members.
Blue Line Innovations says that more than 130,000 North American households are using its PowerCost Monitor, but that its customers have been asking for more functionality and deeper, richer applications of the technology.
“When you buy Blue Line’s PowerCost Monitor and WiFi, your real-time home energy use will be wirelessly uploaded into your Hohm profile,” says Troy Batterberry, general manager for Microsoft Hohm.
PowerCost Monitor WiFi Edition includes the optical sensor for acquiring the data, wireless in home monitor and the WiFi Gateway preconfigured with Microsoft Hohm, for $249. Retail partners are Optimum Energy, Smarthome, Amazon, Fry’s, Newegg, Weems Creek Solutions and Microsoft Store.
The PowerCost Monitor WiFi Gateway can also be purchased separately as an upgrade accessory for families with a Blue Line Innovations PowerCost Monitor or Black & Decker Power Monitor. MSRP is $159 for the Gateway only. A home wireless network solution is required.
