Back in January, Meridian was showing off its Special Edition DSP Digital Active Loudspeakers at CES. Indeed, these new speakers are quite special.
That’s because they were designed to mark the 25th anniversary of the company’s very first digital speaker product (the D600). Now it looks like we can finally get this party started, since Meridian has officially started the order process.
The Special Edition DSP8000 SE, the DSP7200 SE and the DSP5200 SE all pack in Meridian’s typical amplifiers and line-level crossovers, right inside the cabinet. However, these standouts will also include a semi-horn-loaded tweeter with a new beryllium dome, new analog electronics, Meridian’s EBA (Enhanced Bass Alignment) technology, and driver clamp rings.
The DSP5200 SE is the smallest of the lot, with two 6.3-inch polypropylene bass drivers and one 1-inch Meridian piston in a short horn, beryllium dome with a silver voice-coil. The DSP7200 SE has two 7.9-inch long-throw bass drivers, one 6.3-inch polypropylene mid-driver, and one 1-inch Meridian piston in a short horn, beryllium dome with a silver voice-coil. And finally, the DSP8000 SE is at the top of the list, with 750 watts of total amp power, six 7.9-inch long-throw bass drivers, one 6.3-inch polypropylene (TPX) mid-driver in a separate enclosure, and the one 1-inch Meridian piston in the short horn, beryllium dome with the silver voice-coil.
Meridian is also making it possible for existing owners of the DSP5200, the DSP7200 and the DSP8000 (including the Anniversary Edition) to upgrade to the new beryllium-dome tweeter and the new electronics. Details on that program will be announced in the coming weeks.
“The new Special Edition DSP Digital Active Loudspeakers from Meridian provide the most revealing, lifelike and powerful performance of any Meridian loudspeakers to date,” said Bob Stuart, one of Meridian’s co-founders and current chairman and chief technical officier. “Developed from expertise honed over more than 25 years of true research and continual system development, these new Special Edition loudspeakers specifically benefit from Meridian’s scientific research into how humans perceive sound, or ‘how we hear,’ in particular focusing on how our brains process live sound.”
Each model is currently available for pre-order. The DSP5200 SE starts at $20,000 per pair, with the horizontal and/or vertical center channel costing $10,000 each. The DSP7200 is $46,000 per pair, with the horizontal and/or vertical center channel priced at $23,000 each. Also sold in pairs, the DSP8000SE goes for $80,000, with the horizontal and/or vertical center channel costing another $40,000.
