Home additions can be tricky when you want to include technology. If you’ve got some design elements you’d like to keep intact, you have to be careful that the tech doesn’t intrude.

For this family/media room installation, the owners wanted to make sure it was still warm and elegant while providing big-screen and surround-sound fun.

“We accomplished this by working closely with the client and their general contractor,” says Rob Kowalski of custom electronics pro Premier Home Theater, Newton, N.J. “A few different ideas were discussed, but one was finally settled on that we all thought would work well to accommodate everyone’s needs.”

The room didn’t come together without its challenges, though, Kowalski adds. Custom cabinetry was created to house a 55-inch Fujitsu plasma as well as Triad front channels in the surround system.

That didn’t leave much room for a subwoofer, so it had to go elsewhere. The slick solution included placing the Triad in-wall sub into the custom window seat that was being built.

“The general contract built in a trap door in the window seat for access, and doubled up on all the plywood for mass,” says Kowalski. “We also had give proper ventilation for the sub so as not to pressurize the cavity. The end result was great.”

Also with the room’s decor in mind—as well as daily operation—Premier Home Theater included Lutron lighting control to further eliminate clutter of having multiple light switches; plus the owner could control the lights from a Crestron color touchscreen controller.
