During the initial meeting between Ontario-based custom electronics pro Di Takon Design and these homeowners, they expressed only a couple of requests for what they wanted in a home theater.

“They wanted excellent sound and video quality, an easy to use system that anyone could operate and they were not interested in having a traditional ‘home theater room,’ ” explains Di Takon owner Pierluigi Cozzi. “While the main purpose of the theater would be for watching movies and English Premier soccer matches, the clients also wanted to be able to kick back with a good book or glass of wine and not feel like they were in an empty cineplex.”

Looking at the result, consider it a success. This theater room is anything but ordinary, especially the main aspect of it not feeling like a dedicated basement-type of room. It’s a cozy family-style room that still delivers major audio and video performance.

The theater installation was part of a complete home demolition and re-build, so Di Takon had almost had a blank canvas to work with, says Cozzi. A.D. General Contracting took care of the construction, and Artisan Design worked on the cabinetry. Wall and fireplace locations were predetermined and could not be modified, and at the request of the homeowner, the screen was placed on the non-traditional, long wall of the rectangular room.

“As a result, equipment selections were more closely examined as viewing distances would be shortened, making video imperfections more visible from all seating positions. In addition, seating layout was also studied in detail to optimize the audio quality of the room,” Cozzi explains.

To aid the video quality, the room was designed without windows so that outside lighting issues would be minimized. A JVC RS-1x projector was chosen for its 1080p quality, especially in a light-controlled environment. A 16:9, 92-inch Artisan Series V screen was ideal to deliver an immersive movie experience while not overwhelming the viewers. And when the show is over, it recesses into the ceiling and the room goes back to a more traditional appearance.

Audio is delivered from RBH Sound’s impressive Signature series speakers, and deep bass is generated by a powerful Velodyne DLS-4000R subwoofer. The 7.1-surround sound system is powered by a Denon AVR-3808CI receiver. “Together, these create an enveloping and kick-in-the-chest auditory theater experience,” enthuses Cozzi.

Not even the equipment rack intrudes on the room, and Di Takon creatively installed it so access to the gear would be convenient and unobtrusive as well. The Middle Atlantic rack is built into custom cabinetry to go along with the room’s decor, and the rear is accessible from a closet on the other side of the room. To minimize sound transmission, the rear cabinet door is also lined with an aluminum-coated vibration damping material, says Cozzi.

For easy control of the room’s A/V, components are integrated using Universal Remote Control’s TX-1000 remote and MSC-400 controller. “This combination allows even a visiting guest to effortlessly operate the theater through easy-to-understand menu selections,” notes Cozzi.
