These days, we rarely make news of iPhone apps for home control systems. The bigger news would be that some company doesn’t have an app for their system!
But Lutron has a nice twist that I haven’t seen before. The company’s new app for the RadioRA 2 has an AWAY mode that simulates occupancy while the homeowners are away. Lights turn on and off automatically, and motorized shades raise and lower.
But the original twist is that Lutron is promoting its new scheduling feature “for controlling the system during holidays or other special events, like Shabbat.”
Many orthodox Jews (and religious people of other faiths, presumably) refrain from “work” on the Sabbath, such as the symbolic task of switching on and off the lights. Some custom electronics pros rig automation systems to perform the tasks for their observant clients during the Sabbath, or Shabbat, hours of sunset Friday to nightfall Saturday.
In fact, stay tuned for a feature story we plan to write on this very subject. Please share your own stories with us!
To our Jewish friends, L’shanah tovah! Happy new year.

We take a peek at some of the current options for outdoor audio.
We have set up a several “Shabbat Clocks” for our Orthodox clients. The systems are set to automatically turn on and off lighting, open and close shades/drapes and in a couple of instances open and close exterior shutters Friday night and Saturday, to the likes of the home owners. The lighting is set to go on 20 minutes before Shabbat (which is 18 minutes before sunset), and we flash same on and off as an alert. Shades/drapes/shutters close around 11PM, and again open Saturday early am for the early risers. We have closet lights going on around 8AM (so they can dress) and off around 9AM when they leave for Synagogue. We can do most anything the homeowner wants.
We also provide a three day button so that when certain Jewish holidays occur just prior or just after Shabbat, the homeowner can just press this button to have the Shabbat events repeat for the 2nd and third day.
Our Rabbi has one.
The systems are pretty cool.
