Disney didn’t want them. Now it appears that Movie Gallery is shutting down the Moviebeam service.
The movie rental chain first bought Moviebeam off of Disney a year ago. Apparently, they couldn’t make it work either. Zatz Not Funny says that Moviebeam might have been a victim of its $250 price tag; once you bought the set-top box, movies could be purchased for an additional $2 to $4.
It looks like you can still scarf up the boxes on the Moviebeam website, but let the buyer beware—the rumor is that service will be cut off as of December 15. However, BetaNews says that newer customers may be able to get a refund on the hardware.
