The CES 2014 countdown has begun! In just a few hours, manufacturers will unleash all sorts of electronic goodies for the New Year. LG Electronics has already kicked off the flood of announcements, with its Ultra HD TV lineup for 2014.
LG is planning a total of 12 Ultra HD 4K TVs for the New Year. The roster includes the 105-inch 105UC9 Curved Ultra HD TV. The hook on this TV isn’t just the 5120-by-2160 (5K!) resolution, but that it also has a 21:6 aspect ratio. Also, this set is expected to sound as good as it looks, thanks to a new collaboration with Harman Kardon. As part of LG’s new “Ultra Sound” concept, the 105UC9 will include a forward-facing 7.2 multi-channel sound system.
For something slightly smaller, LG will have the UB9800 Series, which will be available in 65-, 79-, 84- and 98-inch screen sizes. These sets won’t have the curved screen, but will have a 4K 3840-by-2160 resolution, LG’s Tru-Ultra HD Engine Pro, and an upscaling function for SD, HD or Full HD content. Other features include the upgraded Super Resolution Algorithm and something called 4K Motion Estimation Motion Compensation (MEMC), which boasts crisp, blur-free action.
Also worth mentioning is that all four of the UB9800 TVs will have a built-in 4K HEVC 60p decoder for displaying H.264 and HEVC H.265 formats, in both 30p or 60p. All four sets also feature Ultra HD Cinema 3D, which uses Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology to deliver a 1080p image to each eye.
LG will also have OLED and LED TVs in this year’s Ultra HD lineup. The OLEDs include the 77-inch EC9800 and the EC9700, which will be available in 55- and 65-inch screen sizes. Rounding out the offering will be the LEDs, which include the 55- and 65-inch UB9500 and the 49- and 55-inch UB8500.
“Our newest Ultra HD TV offerings are going to turn a lot of heads at this year’s CES,” said In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of the TV Division at LG Electronics’ Home Entertainment Company. “Image quality is simply outstanding, and consumers are recognizing LG as a trend setter in Ultra HD technology and a leader in moving the 4K medium forward.”
LG says that all of this year’s Ultra HD TVs will also include Smart TV features. However, no other specifics, including availability and pricing, have been announced.
The 105UC9 has a 5120-by-2160 resolution and a 21:9 aspect ratio.
