A lot of manufacturers and retailers are tapping into the cloud to deliver a little something extra to consumers these days. Now, you can add LG into that crop of companies with an added incentive.
LG just announced plans to launch LG Cloud tomorrow (May 1), in beta. However, the company plans to make a stand out service by allowing customers to stream to TVs, mobile devices and PC products. One service, three screens.
No set-top box will be needed to deliver content to Android smartphones, PCs and smart TVs. LG also says that the service will not be limited to the company’s CINEMA 3D models.
To get LG Cloud, users will need to download the app. There’s one for smartphones at the Google Play store, one for TVs in the SmartWorld store, and one for PCs and laptops on the LG Cloud website. Once all of that downloading is done, users will be able to sync content across all of those devices through the cloud-based service.
LG Cloud is compatible with photos, music, videos, and even 3D content. Engadget says that LG will offer 2GB of storage to anyone that wants it. LG users will get 5GB, with 50GB available for free for the first six months. After that, you’ll have to pay. LG, on the other hand, isn’t saying much, except that free and paid options will be available and may differ by market.
“Most companies today only see the cloud as a storage device or in the case of YouTube or Flickr, only for one type of content,” said LG’s Mr. Kwon. “LG makes the devices that millions of people watch content on so we can set a new yardstick for ease of use by setting up our own cloud service. Tomorrow’s consumers don’t want to go to one cloud for music, another cloud for video, another location for photos and yet another cloud for their office files. In the end, our solution is about making life more convenient.”
LG Cloud will launch in South Korea to start. The service is then expected to spread out to other markets by mid-2013.
