LG Introduces “Frameless” Plasma TV
Single-layer technology allows the picture to take over this entire screen.
July 01, 2008 | by Rachel Cericola

If you’re looking to really blend that TV into your decor, LG has a unit for you—or will at some point.

The PG61 is a “frameless” plasma TV. That means it’s a single layer, resembling a big sheet of black glass. Maybe I am missing something, but the image looks like it has a frame—a black frame. How is that different from a normal TV? Are they just using a stock photo?

The PG61 must have a great picture or laser beams or something. Domain-b.com says it took home the Best of Innovations award at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show.

It’s not April, July, or whatever fool’s, though. LG has two models displayed on its Indian site. Specs include a 30,000:1 contrast ratio on each, a response speed of 0.001ms, HDMI 1.3 support, and LG’s own SimpLink, which allows for one remote over all of your connected devices. Also, it won the CES accolades under the model number PG60. Why change one digit? Why not! They both look pretty cool. We’re guessing that the frameless design doesn’t convey well over the web.

Two things each model doesn’t have: pricing and a U.S. release date.

Rachel, I agree that the bezel is clearly visible in that pic and would be even more obvious when the set is actually on. Hardly what I would call “frameless” to be sure..

Thanks for the info, TVGeek! I was wondering why I couldn’t find it anywhere…

The Indian PG61 is the American PG60, which is already available in 50 and 60 inch flavors (50PG60 and 60PG60).  By the way, the American PG60 is superior to the Indian PG60, also including THX display certification.  The design produces a “frameless” effect when the TV is off, due to the single-layer glass-like sheet covering the entire display.  When the TV is on, however, the borders can be seen (just like in the picture).  Nonetheless, it is one of the most beautiful Plasma TV designs ever conceived and will definitely have followers… Cnet gave the 50PG60 a 7.6 rating.
