Apparenly, the soundbase category is picking up steam. LG Electronics just announced an update to last year’s LAP340. Meet the LAB540W SoundPlate.
However, the latest SoundPlate isn’t just another speakerbar. Instead, this one packs in a 3D-capable Blu-ray player with Smart TV streaming—all in one unit. Well, if you want to get technical, it’s actually two units. This setup also comes with a wireless subwoofer to round out the sound part of the package.
Right out of the box, the unit can supply access to services like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus and more. (Assuming you have a subscription to those services, anyway.) The soundbase portion of the package measures a mere 1.5 inches tall and can rest under a variety of TVs ranging from 32 to 55 inches. It also has Bluetooth, so users can stream content directly to the speaker from any compatible device, such as a smartphone or tablet. All together, the 4.1 system boasts 320 watts of sound.
“TVs may get the most attention from consumers looking to enhance their home theaters, but at LG we know that great sound is also at the heart of the home entertainment experience,” said Tim Alessi, head of new product development for LG Electronics USA. “We designed our SoundPlates to be a turnkey solution with great sound quality and smart TV functionality for added value, and we packaged it in a compact, stylish design.”
LG is selling the LAB540W SoundPlate now, with an MSRP of $599.
