Who has the latest momentum in the next-gen DVD format war? According to HD DVD (according to a combination of data) it’s ... HD DVD.

The North American HD DVD Promotional Group announced this week that overall HD DVD hardware sales were up 37 percent from Q1 to Q2 2007, while software sales grew 20 percent. The organization said the data is based on NPD reports, Nielsen Netratings reports and point of sale data from the studios.

The group also noted that the reports showed rival Blu-ray hardware sales saw a 27 percent decline from Q1 to Q2, and Blu-ray software sales were down 5 percent.

Both HD DVD and Blu-ray have had their share of promotions, price drops and pick-ups lately in this see-saw market. We’ll see who gets the next leg up for fall and the subsequent holiday shopping season.
