KEF’s MUON loudspeaker
If you’re an audiophile seeking out a Rolls Royce-type of limited edition loudspeaker that speaks to utmost luxury, we’ve got the speakers for you. And you’ll want to act quickly on these exclusive babies—they will be limited in production to 100 pairs and will be sold only in 10 cities worldwide, including New York and L.A.
The speaker is the ultra-modern, Ross Lovegrove-designed MUON from British manufacturer KEF, renowned British manufacturer of audiophile-quality speakers. These speakers, which stand nearly 7 feet tall, were recently unveiled during the prestigious Milan design fair. And the retail tag? For the limited edition gem, $130,000.
The aim of the MUON project was to create the ultimate in sound technology and design innovation, says KEF. The MUON is made from super-formed aluminum, which uses a similar molding process to vacuum forming, and malleable sheets of heated aluminum were used to achieve otherwise impossible shapes, the company says.
MUON features a four-way speaker system mounted into the front of the structure with powerful bass drivers, as well as the upper mid-range and treble where the Uni-Q drive unit array helps deliver a seamless sonic picture throughout the listening environment, according to KEF.
KEF also used its Acoustic Compliance Enhancement (ACE) technology to effectively double the available volume through adsorption of air molecules by activated carbon, or ‘magic dust’. The two additional bass drivers mounted on the back of MUON help to produce a clean and open sound by dealing with room effects, KEF says, while the 6-mm thick, heavily damped aluminum shell provides a rigid structure that minimizes any sound-distorting vibrations.
