Kaleidescape Beefs Up Operating System
Updated OS a boon for iPod owners and classical music buffs.
December 04, 2007 | by Rebecca Day

Kaleidescape, known for its high-end multi-room video and audio servers that make bit-for-bit replicas of the original recordings, has just released update 3.5 of its Entertainment Appliance Operating System (KEAOS). The new OS offers iTunes integration and a new interface designed specifically for classical music.

Kaleidescape Conductor enables users to integrate the files located on their Kaleidescape music servers with the music libraries on their PCs, iPods or other digital music players.

The Conductor automatically keeps the selected collection of music in sync on the user’s PC. A smart find feature of the software automatically recognizes genres or even artist playlists, so that if you have an Eagles mix and score Long Road Out of Eden for Christmas, the tunes from the new CD will automatically populate the Eagles playlist when you load the disc in the server.

Users can choose to add all or some of their Kaleidescape collection for use on a portable player or laptop.

Classical music aficionados got a long-overdue treat from the Kaleidescape software release in the form of a new classical music interface. The classical section includes metadata features specifically tailored to the needs and tastes of classical music buffs—including the ability to find a selection in various ways not available in iTunes or other digital music libraries. Users who want to search for a Bach minuet, for instance, can now do so within the Kaleidescape interface by searching via Bach or minuet, categories that aren’t included in other digital music management systems.

In addition, the Classical Music Interface allows music buffs to view biographical information about the composers, performers, conductors and works for music stored on the server. Also included are photos and artist renderings of the musicians and composers.

Kaleidescape music servers connect to PCs over a home network. Entry price for a Kaleidescape four-zone music server is $8,995 for a 250-gigabyte version that stores 400-500 CDs. The system is expandable both in storage space and zone capacity.
