Earlier this year Kaleidescape launched its own online movie store where users can download Blu-ray and DVD quality movie files to their Kaleidescape system (including the less-expensive Cinema One system). Initially the store launched only with Warner films and TVs shows. Today the company announced that it is adding about 2,000 new titles from Lionsgate.
With the Lionsgate agreement come popular movies like The Hunger Games and Twilight series, classics like Apocalypse Now and TVs shows including Mad Men.
High definition titles are in 1080p/24 video with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio lossless soundtracks.Titles that are currently available as Blu-ray discs will be made available as Blu-ray equivalent downloads on the Kaleidescape store. And like the movies from Warner, viewers will have the opportunity to upgrade their existing Lionsgate DVD titles to high definition downloads for about $7 each. 1,400 of the newly added titles will be in HD.
When a customer downloads a Lionsgate movie from Kaleidescape, a digital UltraViolet copy will also go into that user’s cloud locker. The UV version can then be viewed on a tablet, smart phone or other compatible internet-connected device.
As new Lionsgate titles come out on Blu-ray or DVD, they will be available on the Kaleidescape store on the same day as the disc release.
Not all of the 2,250 titles will be immediately available at launch, but Kaleidescape is working to get them into the system as fast as possible.
“Our customers now have the opportunity to easily purchase more of their favorite titles, in the highest audio and video quality available, from the comfort of their homes and have them delivered automatically via the Internet. And with these high-quality digital downloads, they can eliminate their dependency on physical discs and the clutter that goes along with them,” said Michael Malcolm, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Kaleidescape.
Malcolm said that the company is in discussions with another dozen movie studios, so more announcements may be coming.
