Last week’s Consumer Electronics Show wasn’t just about TVs and tablets. There was a lot of audio blasting out of the various ends of the Las Vegas Convention Center. JBL Synthesis was certainly doing its part, with its high-end S4700 loudspeaker.

Harman’s JBL Synthesis brand just announced this 3-way floorstanding speaker, which promises professional-grade driver technologies in a stylish package. Some of those technologies have been picked up from the Project Everest DD66000 and Project K2 S9900 loudspeakers.

Measuring 42.1 inches high, JBL says that the S4700 can be used as a left, center or right speaker in a JBL Synthesis multichannel home theater installation. It packs in a 15-inch woofer, a 15-inch pure-pulp-cone woofer with dual 3-inch voice coils, and a high-power neodymium magnet motor structure.

It also has midrange/high-frequency and ultra-high-frequency compression drivers that are housed in a single-piece dual-horn assembly that’s made of JBL’s own SonoGlass, a dense, acoustically inert resin material.

Other highlights on that 175Nd-3 midrange/high-frequency compression driver include a 2-inch AquaPlas-coated titanium diaphragm that’s mated to a 90-by-60-degree BiRadial horn. There’s also a 138Nd 0.75-inch pure-titanium high-frequency compression driver, which operates into a 60-by-30-degree BiRadial horn. JBL says that the driver’s response extends to beyond 40kHz and all three of the S4700’s drivers are matched to deliver a smooth tonal balance across the entire frequency spectrum. It also has a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing tuned port.

JBL Synthesis will start selling the S4700 loudspeaker this month. It will feature a furniture-grade cherry wood finish, a black grille cloth, and an MSRP of $20,000 per pair.
