Back in the day, speakers were built to crank sound and last a lifetime. However, there have been a lot of advances, making those old speakers seem sort of, well… old.

JBL Authentics is combining that classic style with some newer technology into two new speakers. The L16 and L8 both have wood enclosures and 24-bit, 96kHZ signal paths. Each one also packs in AirPlay, DLNA and Bluetooth connectivity, so you can play sound from a variety of digital sources, all without wires.

Also worth noting is that these speakers are the “first” to have Harman Signal Doctor. This new technology promises to restore some of the details that can get lost in today’s compressed music files. Other features include analog, optical, and on-board moving coil and moving magnet phono preamps, as well as support for the free JBL Music app.

The L8 has four 30-watt amps, 4-inch woofers, 1-inch tweeters and a glossy black finish. The L16 is a step up, with six 50-watt amps driving 5.25-inch woofers, 2-inch mid-range drivers, and 1-inch tweeters. The L16 also has a walnut finish.

“No one has a better claim to authenticity in great audio reproduction,” said Michael Mauser, president of Harman’s Lifestyle Division. “The JBL Authentics Series speakers are immediately recognizable classic speakers, updated for the way we listen to music today, with the latest in wireless connectivity for Wi-Fi and handheld devices.”

JBL Authentics has priced the L8 at $599, with the L16 selling for $999. Both are now available for pre-order, with the first shipments expected on February 15, 2014.
