Is the PlayStation 3 Still the Best Blu-ray Player?
The first future-proof Blu-ray deck used to be the cheapest player, but it's not any more.

When Sony’s PlayStation 3 was first introduced, it was the most full-featured Blu-ray player—and happened to have a great price.

At $399 and compatible with Profile 2.0, I argued that the PS3 was the best Blu-ray player for your home theater.

But that was in May of last year. And times have certainly changed.

Now, there’s a plethora of Profile 2.0 players available on the market from a number of manufacturers. Many of them are priced close to or below the PS3, which has remained at $399 for the base level.

If Profile 2.0 doesn’t matter to you, there are even more Blu-ray players available at even cheaper prices.

So, that leads us to ask: Is the PlayStation 3 still the best Blu-ray player?

Vote in the poll below, then let us know why in a comment below.

Considering you get a video game system with it, why wouldn’t it be the best blu ray player?

Windows Media Center Usable
Wifi
Web Browser
PS Home Instant Video Streaming
USB ports
Storage

...then it plays BlueRay discs comparable to all other players!

Why even talk about games when we are looking for a BD player? fine it plays the best looking games on the market but thats no reason to choose.

As a BD player its the only one I have and saddly its still coming out as the best for picture and sound. I don’t like the way it looks in my setup but I have learn to pass it.

The one thing I have to say about this player is that when it comes to the “other” capabilities of this abstract picaso is simply perfect, I can download my HD family home videos/pictures with ease and view them with style. its the best thing that happen to my HT since I became addicted to this expensive hobby.

Cry all u want about the awesome game library but thats just because you can’t handle the fact that this is the best piece of hardware u can buy for entertainment.

Idiotproof firmware updates, All of the latest and greatest uncompressed Audio Formats, including DTS HD Master 7.1, Fast load times, No need for a memory stick to use BD live content or do a firmware update. It is an excellent product and simple to use with no hassles.

More than I can say about almost any other BD player on the market.

The only negative is that the optional remote is cheap, and getting a Harmony to work with it can be a trick (but it CAN be done).

Still an excellent value for the money, and if the rumoured price drop in March occurs, I will be buying another one.

If you’re into gaming, it might appear to be the best player. And if that’s the case, then it might be the best value, but not the best player. There are MUCH better players out there for the same or less money. I’d put my Panasonic DMP-BD55K up against one of them ANY day.
