It seems inevitable. Does iTunes have anywhere to go but into HD? Crunch Gear says it may be possible, and could save Apple TV.

Commenters were quick to point out that the Apple’s box already supports 720p, and iTunes has 720p programming. So where’s the problem—and the news?

Apparently iTunes has another overhaul coming this month, so expect to click and download details soon. Crunch Gear also says that Apple has ordered more AppleTV units. The rumor is that the two are somehow tied together.

Maybe it all has something to do with MacNN’s report that they will add movie rentals? Stay tuned.

actually, the appleTV already does hd. there are several hd podcasts available from the itunes store (free) that look fantastic on a big screen (wish i could say the same for the podcast hosts).

adding more hd content then, be it movie/tv downloads/rentals, isn’t really a major leap in technology. what would really be nice is if they enabled surround sound for our current (legally) home-ripped movies.
