Inside Entourage Star Kevin Connolly’s Home Theater Transformation
DIY Network helps actor turn drab bar area into an eye-popping screening room.

Oh, to be rich and famous enough that TV networks make shows about fixing up my home. Entourage may be winding down as the hit HBO series recently kicked off its final season, but things are just starting to heat up, technology-wise, at the home of star Kevin Connolly.

Hollywood Hi-Tech, a new program on the DIY Network, recently helped Connolly, better known as “E” to Entourage fans, transform his bachelor pad-style bar area into a home theater.

Ari Gold, Drama, Turtle and Vinny Chase won’t have a problem screening a movie or two on Connolly’s 110-inch Stewart Filmscreen StudioTek Screen.

Connolly’s theater also features Lutron blackout shades to prevent unwanted light, a Crestron Isys wireless touchpanel and iLux Lighting Control System, and Genelec in-ceiling loudspeakers.

Robert’s Home Audio and Video Inc. was the installer of Connolly’s home theater. Robert’s partnered with DIY Network and Baldwin Construction on Hollywood Hi-Tech to complete home theater transformations for four celebrities: Connolly, Academy Award winning director Oliver Stone, Entertainment Tonight special correspondent and co-anchor Nancy O’Dell, comedian Adam Carolla and actor Patrick Warburton of the TV comedy series Rules of Engagement.

In a blog post on its website, Robert’s says “We were only given 3 days for each home, to turn a normal room into a complete home theater.”

I saw this episode and other than so many things wrong in so many ways, it lacked real creativity. It was just slap stuff in a room. As was the Nancy O’Dell episode. It was boring and the final product flat. The finish work around the speakers crammed in the walls was horrible. Although the original install did not have back boxes, it was far cleaner and professional. And that bright wall the screen the screen was on with the back walls so dark! Why do the “go to” “designers”, in house and landscaping, do a far less better job than their “regular guy” counterparts? OH, and I noticed that they use the same gear each time. What if it not appropriate and what about all the other gear in the world? Still the same stuff? Or “blatant product placement”? Man Caves, Mega Dens, Yard Crashers, and the other “regular guys” all do a far more creative and better job in three days. And why three days? Granted Reality TV needs turmoil, but this is not that kind of reality. It’s suppose to be see how Cool TV. Three days is “Housewives of Rental City”. I’m not impressed by the “designers” ability.

I’d like to see a show where they put real thought and time into a project and show us some amazing new techniques, concepts and products. And not just those arranged by producers or sales agents and slapped up in three days. No need for turmoil here, unless that’s the impression that they want to leave the viewer with. It’ll be interesting to see what mayhem they come up with next?
