Want a builder that can deliver all of your digital dreams? Find one that has the technology in their own home. William Heafner of PC Homes was looking to build a few smart homes—including his own.
Heafner mentioned that he had just bought a ranch-style home with a full unfinished basement that was ripe for a remodel. This was the perfect lab to test out what technology could do to the homes he was planning to build.
Unfamiliar with some of the smart home technology and intergrated audio/video systems, Heafner did know that he wanted that “wow” factor.
Custom Electronics Group designed a whole-house system with a variety of features based partly on his wants. The home was completly rewired with smarthome technology, high-speed telcom lines, data lines, and networking for every room.
To add some of that “wow,” each room also had an audio control pad with in-ceiling speakers.
There are two cameras mounted outside at the garage and the front entrance, tied into the video distribution system, which can be viewed on any TV. The back deck and lower porch have audio control with outdoor speakers.
The basement was finished and is an entertainment paradise, complete with a billiards table, a poker table, a full bar and two 32-inch HD LCDs. If he doesn’t feel like getting his game on, there is a home theater with a 50-inch plasma in the fireplace sitting area.
Other highlights include whole-house access to DirecTV, XM radio, a 400-disc DVD collection, an MP3 server and cameras. All of the video is controlled with embedded IR sensors.
All of the equipment is housed in a small room in the basement.
The project took several months and about $72,000 to complete. Now Heafner has that “wow”—and he’s even looking to add more.
