There's a rumor that the company is getting out of the TV business.

In case you didn’t know, HP sold TVs—MediaSmart TVs. Well, don’t update your brain or anything, because the rumor is that they won’t be selling them for long.

Blogger Chris Lanier has an unofficial report that the company is getting out of the TV business, and will solely focus on the MediaSmart Receiver. Of course, this will mean no Microsoft in your HDTV experience. Is that so bad?

Announced earlier this year, the HP MediaSmart Receiver is a set-top box, which turns any TV into a “connected” TV. That means you can stream photos, music and videos—no DVD though. It can be used wired or wirelessly, and with multiple PCs.

Over the summer, the company was touting updates to its MediaSmart TVs, which included web access for two of the models in the 1080p line. In case you’re still interested, keep your eye on your local Costco. Supposedly, they will be slashing prices on current displays.

We don’t want to get all crazy, though, because there’s no official word from HP or anyone else. Stay tuned for additional updates.
