Home Theater Raises the Bar on Entertainment
Unused bonus room becomes lavish bar and theater hangout, with the ability to watch HD in dual-view form.

Some nights you feel like going to the movies. Others, you want to hit the sports bar. These homeowners can stay home and do both.

“They love to entertain, and they wanted a high-performing space that exuded elegance,” says Michael Wohl of electronics installation company Media Design Associates (MDA) in Dania Beach, Fla. “Since they had extremely high standards and friends in very high places, we had to raise the bar for them.”

MDA did that, literally, by providing a bar counter with stools that serve as the third row of seating—plus a full-service wet bar to the side of the main theater room. MDA collaborated with Jay Miller of theater design firm Acoustic Innovations, as well as interior designer Stacey Slintak of Decorators Unlimited to transform what was an unused bonus room.

A Stewart Filmscreen fixed display measures 110 diagonal inches and has a high-definition broadcast aspect ratio of 16:9 for all of the DirecTV sports drama the owners can handle.

And to watch several games at once on the single screen, MDA installed Crestron’s DVPHD dual-window high-definition digital video processor.

“It was like giving them their own private sports bar,” says Wohl. If it’s movie night, the homeowners can scroll through their entire DVD collection stored on a Kaleidescape movie server.

A 7.1-channel JBL Synthesis audio system generously complements the video. The installers did not want the big sound leaking into lower floors and the master bedroom, so Iso Floor, plywood, carpet and padding was used to attenuate more than half of the acoustic energy. In addition, SoundCor barrier material was applied behind the Sheetrock to further reduce sound transmission and stiffen the walls for better bass. Draperies, fabric-covered acoustical panels, and bass traps also enhance the performance.

The room’s finishing touch is an equipment rack that’s out of the way so it doesn’t distract during movies but is accessible enough for the owners to show off. It’s certainly a barroom conversation piece.
