Home Energy Management Gets Real
A new breed of systems offer energy monitoring, control and affordability.

Want to save some bucks on your electricity and energy costs? The really good news is that fairly comprehensive home energy management systems are becoming much more available—and in several case more affordable. There are several pretty good systems either here today or on the way that offer different levels of energy monitoring and control over the devices in your home.

In the higher end,  soon-to-be available systems from home control companies Savant and Crestron integrate whole-house energy monitoring with the company’s control systems. Both Savant and Crestron say that with additional programming, their systems can be set to automatically turn devices off or down when certain energy ceilings are hit. This level of integration between energy monitoring and control systems, many believe, is the holy grail of home energy management. It’s set-it-and-forget it automation.

A host of more affordable solutions are available from companies like HAI (Home Automation Inc.), Eaton, BlueBolt and Control4 with its new Eragy Watts on Now! app.
