Holiday Gift Guide: Music Lovers’ Playlist
Need some new material to test out your audio rooms and home theaters? Pump up the volume with these.
November 06, 2013 by EH Staff

Internet streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify have made it easier than ever to try on some new tunes for size, plus hear them throughout the house with today’s receivers, housewide audio systems and wireless speakers. The streaming services are kind of like the web-era version of the old listening rooms at record stores of yore (the one featured on the short-lived show American Dreams comes to mind), where you could put on some headphones plugged into a turntable and spin some new 45s and LPs before you bought them.

Of course, despite all of the music brought forth through online streaming services these days, there are still plenty of reasons to actually owning music (download or disc varieties).

With that in mind, we wanted to give you some ideas for music that’s been released this year that would make fun presents for the music fan on your holiday gift list. Plus if you wrap up a vinyl record they might be thrown off by thinking it’s a calendar before unwrapping.

If it’s not for your own enjoyment, figure out what type of music format might make the most sense to give: vinyl, Blu-ray disc, DVD, CD, high-resolution audio (HRA) download gift card, etc. Then again, a gift subscription to SiriusXM could be pretty sweet too. Maybe they’ll thank you by inviting you over for a concert night in their home theater.

(Note: Except where otherwise noted, we’ve gone with Amazon for simple pricing reference.)
