HDMI 2.0 Comes Supporting 4K and 32-Channel Audio
The new spec promises better bandwidth without the need for new cables.

It’s been a while since HDMI has had any innovations. That’s because the HDMI Forum wanted to make HDMI 2.0 truly something special. Now, the spec has gotten a formal announcement, with several interesting features.

HDMI 2.0 will arrive just in time—well, almost. After all, we have been talking up 4K for a little while now. That said, HDMI 2.0 should arrive as 4K TV hits mainstream audiences, boasting better bandwidth (up to 18Gbps) so it can support a 3,840-by-2,160 resolution at up to 60fps.

Other features include support for 32-channel (!) audio, as well as dynamic auto lip-sync and extensions to Consumer Electronics Control (CEC).

Also worth noting is that HDMI 2.0 will be backward compatible with earlier versions of the spec. It also doesn’t require new cables or connectors. Instead, your current HDMI cables (category 2 cables) should be able to handle the extra bandwidth.

“The introduction of the HDMI 2.0 Specification represents a major milestone for the HDMI Forum,” said Robert Blanchard of Sony Corporation, who serves as president of the HDMI Forum. “Our members collaborated closely to take the highly successful HDMI Specification to the next level by expanding audio and video features for consumer electronics applications.”

The HDMI Forum will make the complete Version 2.0 available to Adopters on the HDMI Adopter Extranet. HDMI Licensing, LLC is also planning to highlight the spec’s new features at a press conference on Friday, September 6 at 12:00 p.m. at IFA 2013 in Berlin.

From there, the HDMI 2.0 Compliance Test Specification (CTS) is expected to be released before the end of 2013.
