HD DVD Tops 100K Standalone Units Sold
The first anniversary of the HD DVD format is marked by a sales milestone, lower prices and promotion with Toshiba.
April 18, 2007 | by Arlen Schweiger

April is turning into a pretty good month for high-definition DVD formats overall, and especially HD DVD.

The format marked its one-year anniversary last week and the North American HD DVD Promotional Group announced that sales of standalone HD DVD players (not including Xbox add-ons or PC sales) has topped 100,000 in the United States.

This comes on the heels of Blu-ray supporter Samsung’s recent announcement of a dual-format Blu-ray/HD DVD player expected to be released by this winter, as well as Toshiba putting its $400 HD DVD model HD-A2 on shelves this month while dropping the price of its 1080p HD-A20 model.

And not to confuse readers as an endorsement of the advertisement they might see on this web site, but through the end of August Toshiba also has a rebate promotion of five free HD DVD movies with purchase of a player. For people looking to venture into the high-def DVD world and quickly start a collection, this seems like a worthwhile way to save $100-$150 (depending on where you might ordinarily buy the discs).

Makes us eagerly anticipating similar good news on the Blu-ray front as well.
