ABI Research says that PS3s will account for more than 85 percent of Blu-ray players in use this year.
Blu-ray may have won the war, but it’s still in the fight—to get sales.
Research firm NPD Group says (via USA Today) that the demise of HD DVD hasn’t really helped Blu-ray sales much.
In fact, the report says that Blu-ray hardware sales dropped 40 percent from January to February. Also, sales only grew 2 percent from February to March.
However, that number excludes the number of PlayStation consoles, so the real number of players involved is a mystery. However, Sony says they sold 257,120 PS3s in March, doubling 2007’s numbers.
“When we surveyed consumers late last year, an overwhelming number of them said they weren’t investing in a new next-generation player because their old DVD player worked well and next-generation players were too expensive,” said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at NPD. “It’s clear from retail sales that those consumer sentiments are still holding true.”
Another contributing factor seems to be that consumers are still waiting for players with web connectivity. This is one of the many reasons that consumers still prefer the PS3 over a stand-alone player. Because of this (and, of course, the gaming aspect), ABI Research says that the number of stand-alone players probably won’t surpass PS3s until 2013.
In February, Toshiba announced that it would abandon the HD DVD format by the end of March.

Uh-huh. Then why aren’t people lining up at Wal-Mart to buy BD players? And why aren’t they just throwing thier 720p display onto the curb, and getting loans to buy 1080p displays. This thread was about “sales figures”, not your overblown sense of self-importance.
I’d suggest spenging some money on upgrades. You’d have to be a moron to suggest you cannot see a worthwhile difference between Blu Ray and upscaled DVD. Absolute moron in fact. Your opinion speaks for itself. Good luck with overcompressed downloads, it speaks volumes of your thought process and desire for quality. If you can buy wahtver you want, when you want, I suggest glasses, a new display device, an MRI to evaluate the brain and visual pathway, and whatever else is causing your lack of perception…
Umm, no, obviously the slurs you are casting are only true about yourself. As you had a knee jerk reaction, and did not read our many posts that said we had 720p… AS DO MOST AMERICANS. You are nothing more than the polar opposite of “buyers remorse”, you want to believe so badly that your purchase was worth it that you begin insulting everyone who has a differing opinion. My household income is 4x the national average, and I have $10k sitting in may AV mad-money fund… I can buy whatever I want whenever I want, but I am not an impatient childish Fan-Boi… and I choose to wait :) HD Download will be here soon…
I’d say you are correct about yourself, not the US population. On another note, it would help if you had a 1080p capable set, not 720p. Demonstrating 1080p24 output on a 720p set, which who knows the quality is not a fair demo. There are a lot of quality differences between display devices. The diffrence becomes even more noticeable the closer the viewing distance and the larger the display. Demos at my place are STRIKING between upscaled DVD and Blu Ray.

Why? Have you ever heard the saying “If a tree falls in the woods, and nobody is there to hear it; does it make a sound?”. BD is the tree, and NOBODY is there to hear it; except suckers like you!
BTW: how small is your schwanz, having to use insulting slurs. Why don’t you go down to Wal-Mart and tell Billy-Bob J6P that he is a moron for not caring abotu BD; he will find that tiny schwanz and gladly remove it for you :)
