You may want to spend even more time out in the summer sun based on the relatively lightweight Blu-ray release schedule. There are a few gems this month to shine on your home theater, including some instant classics for music lovers, but this isn’t the hottest month.
Music fans looking to rock in high-def will be able to get their fill with the likes of Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood: Live from Madison Square Garden, Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music, and a 70th Birthday Concert for John Mayall in the mix. Plus this week Neil Young released his absolutely epic Archives Vol. One of 10 discs, high-resolution tunes and much interactivity (and it’s only the first in what should be an amazing set of releases over the upcoming years).
Critically acclaimed pics such as Glory, Sling Blade and Do the Right Thing highlight “new classics,” while black-and-white mid-20th century masterpieces The Seventh Seal and Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb ought to provide some intriguing transfers to high-def.
Fans of super-wide aspect ratio can have their cake and eat it too, with laughs—look for generational iconic films The Graduate (2.35:1) and Ghostbusters (2.40:1) to fill your ‘scope setup in all their original cinematographic glory.
TV fans can catch up on the first two seasons of Lost out this month, or grab the latest season of Weeds, the fourth to hit Blu-ray.
