If you’re interested in green technology and sustainable design, they’ll be many examples on display this weekend in Washington, D.C., as part of the 5th annual National Sustainable Design Expo, which takes place on the National Mall (between Constitution and Independence Avenues and 3rd and 4th Streets).

More than 40 college teams and other exhibitors from across the country will show their innovative solutions for an environmentally sustainable future, including generating ethanol from coffee production wastewater, embedding small glass spheres in house paint to deflect heat in the summer, hybrid solar and solar thermal roof systems, solar ovens for indoor and outdoor cooking, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to maximize prairie switchgrass ethanol yield.

One school is measuring the benefits of automated energy monitoring systems using temperature and moisture sensors in home. (I definitely want to follow up on that.)

The expo will begin at noon on Saturday, April 18 and will also showcase EPA’s Annual People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Award competition. The students compete for grants to bring their innovations to market, and previous winners have stared successful businesses.

Past exhibits have included a smart window system that opens and closes automatically to cool and ventilate a building, bio-methane-powered cars, and a community-scale biodiesel processor.

Staff will post updates on EPA’s Twitter account throughout the expo. You can also see the video from past years
