In commemoration of the day, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) is giving away several green prizes, and the last day to enter is today (June 6.) Winners will be selected on Thursday June 7, 2012 in a random drawing from all eligible entries received.

The prizes include including the Eton Mobius (a solar iPhone charger), the Eton Rukus (a solar boombox), the Nest Learning Thermostat (a home energy manager), and an energy efficient Panasonic Blu-ray disc player.

This year’s theme was the Green Economy and how we are all part of it. The Green Economy is made up of 10 sectors: waste, energy supply, buildings, fisheries, forestry, transport, water, agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing and industry. Energy efficiency and eCycling are two big priorities for the electronics industry, and represent two of the Green Economy sectors.
There are nearly 2.9 billion consumer electronics (CE) devices in U.S. households and an average of 25 devices per household, including battery-operated CE devices. Home use of CE devices equaled 13.2 percent of overall residential electricity consumption and 9.3 percent of residential primary energy consumption.

The CEA advocates that when your CE device has reached the end of its usefulness, take a look at extending the life of the product through resale or reuse. The organizations’ GreenerGadgets site provides recycling information and e-cycling locations to help you responsibly recycle your used electronics.
