Ghostbusters on Blu-ray will be out in June

Ever look at the date a movie was released and think, “Man, has it really been that long?” This year marks the 25th anniversary of “Ghostbusters,” and Sony said last week that we can look forward to seeing the film’s Blu-ray treatment on June 16.

This one didn’t make its way into our “10 Movies that Belong on Blu-ray” list last month, but it should be one of the year’s highly anticipated titles for the format.

Anyone who’s in his 30s like myself can appreciate the nostalgia and remembers the mania that accompanies “Ghostbusters” with its theatrical release, which pretty much typified early-to-mid-80s pop culture. And this movie actually lived up to hype—vintage Bill Murray, special effects that were cool for the time, and a hilarious script.

Will it look a little outdated on Blu-ray? Maybe, but it should also be a pretty nice feast for the eyes and ears. No audio specs yet, but High-Def Digest says presentation will be on a BD-50 dual-layer disc with 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video plus what sounds like a thorough picture-in-picture “Slimer Mode” commentary among the extra goodies.

With the growing trend of CinemaScope 2.35:1 aspect ratio home theater setups out there—either custom installed or of the DIY variety—Blu-ray “Ghostbusters” in its superwide presentation without the black bars should be a treat for many theater owners. It might not be “Iron Man” or “Dark Knight’ edgy, but in what should be a big year for the Blu-ray format (and for people whose movie libraries consist mainly of those flicks you can watch over and over) this one’s bound to bring a big smile to your home theater.

Any other titles you’ve heard will be released this year and can’t wait to see on Blu-ray?
