Frickin’ Laser Beamz Can Stream Hits
The totally bizarre party product wants to add music you can jam to.
September 04, 2008 | by Rachel Cericola

There’s this unbelievably bizarre product called the beamz. Connect it to your computer, and the thing creates lasers, which you can them “strum” like guitar strings. It makes music, probably makes you happy, and slightly more geeky.

How someone came up with such a device, we don’t know. We don’t want to know. However, it does have the claim to fame that Gizmodo gave it a “worst informercial” shout out a few months back.

Although the system first popped up in April, the company says they are now giving it some street cred by allowing users to download music from U2, Justin Timberlake, and Rihanna. In other words, while you may look stupid, you can still be contemporary.

“This takes playing air guitar to the next level,” said Jerry Riopelle, inventor and musician. “Now you actually hear yourself contributing to the music instead of just pretending to be part of the band.”

The company says that 15 tracks are currently for sale. Another five will come each month, through the end of the year.

If you’ve invested the $400 on one of these gadgets, it’s nice to be able to add a “Guitar Hero”-style twist on it. However, it seems more like a way for the company to get more money out of people that chose this over a karaoke machine. Expect to pay $3 for each track; original compositions are also available for a buck less each.
