Once the home theater bug bites, it’s tough to shake. The owners of this elegantly appointed space had a theater in their previous home, so it was only natural that this time around—especially with two young children—they’d have another one built as a prime entertainment destination.

Custom electronics firm Innerspace Electronics, Port Chester, N.Y., handled the request for a space that could provide equal opportunity socializing and entertaining as part of a basement finishing project that incorporates a dedicated theater.

The result is a theater that balances comfort, taste and performance, anchored by a SIM2 and Stewart Filmscreen projection system combination and Bowers & Wilkins and Rotel audio system tandem.

On the video side, the Mico 50 projector from SIM2 (see our review here) is an LED model, so unlike more common LCD and DLP light engine projectors it doesn’t require changing a bulb every few years even with all the kids’ TV viewing that will be going on. SIM2 estimates the LEDs’ typical lifespan to be around 30,000 hours, and Innerspace optimized the video through calibration from its ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) certified technicians. And being from the design-minded SIM2, the projector looks pretty nice hanging out in the open from its ceiling mount.

It beams onto a 110-inch StudioTek 130 G3 screen from Stewart Filmscreen, which is set into a recessed nook that Innerspace adorned with beautiful cabinetry, so it almost looks as if the screen is a huge flat-panel display sitting atop the cabinets. Unbeknownst to the theater goers, at least until the movie fires up, the cabinets are hiding the three B&W CT 7.3 front-channel speakers behind the black acoustically transparent fabric. A pair of B&W Signature NT models on the side and rear, plus two REL subwoofers round out the surround-sound speaker setup. The system is driven by Rotel’s RMB-1575 multichannel amplifier and RB-1572 2-channel amp working with its RSP-1570 surround-sound processor.

To keep audio contained to the room, Innerspace says it “created the isolated theater room using the acoustical treatments under the fabric walls, double sealed sliding doors and carpeted floating floors.” The installers had to do some rerouting of plumbing and mechanical systems, and the finished theater measures almost 20 by 19 feet (length by width), with a height of 8 2/3 feet.

Innerspace had to put both local room gear and equipment for multiroom distribution in the Middle Atlantic rack that resides in the back of the room, but tucked it behind a piece of wall so it stays relatively hidden. The family can easily access and command the sources such as the Samsung streaming Blu-ray player, plus subsystems like lighting and security, using a wireless Control4 touchpanel or remote.

Of course, to top off the great home theater space, the two rows of motorized Acoustic Innovations Deco Sen-Suede chairs accommodate up to nine for lounging in comfort whether it’s movie night, Xbox gaming or marathon kids’ programming sessions.
