Christmas is right around the corner; have you purchased your connected TV yet? If so, you’re not alone. Research firm Parks Associates says that 3 million U.S. households plan to find a web-enabled TV under the tree this year.

The numbers may sound impressive, with 38 percent of households planning to make some type of CE purchase by Christmas. Those numbers are actually down, however, when compared to the 50 percent from the same period last year.

“Only 38 percent of U.S. broadband households plan to purchase a CE device this year, but it’s the connected CE and smartphones that will be the most popular items,” said Kurt Scherf, VP, principal analyst, Parks Associates. “Connected devices are the future of content consumption and entertainment in the living room as they capture the broader trends of integration among different silos in consumers’ lives. We will continue to follow their sales through 2011 with Connected CE Tracker.”

Connected CE could mean a TV, a Blu-ray player, an iPad, a gaming console, or a slew of other devices. Parks says that 25 percent of U.S. broadband households currently own at least one connected device. Another quarter of those consumers have used that web-enabled device to buy some type of on-demand movie at least once in the past month.

“Connected devices are the future of content consumption and entertainment in the living room as they capture the broader trends of integration among different silos in consumers’ lives,” Scheff added. The report adds that this holiday demand could be another nail in the coffin for brick-and-mortar video sources.
