According to new data from the Electronic Software Association (ESA), gamers are no longer the pimply-faced geeks. OK—they haven’t been for a while, but it seems that the gaming thing has become more of a family affair.
The most startling stat in the ESA’s 2011 sales, demographic, and usage data report is that 29 percent of gamers are actually over the age of 50. The bulk of the gaming community (53 percent) are in the 18 to 49 group. The average gamer is pegged as a 37-year-old, with his (or her) 41-year-old buddy being the one to actually buy the most games.
“Being immersed in a video game, and having your brain stimulated, can encourage creative solutions and adaptations,” said Dr. Allen S. Weiss, who is also the president and CEO of the NCH Healthcare System. “These beneficial ideas and thoughts can then be applied to real life situations. The results can be surprisingly positive for individuals, communities, and society as a whole.”
It’s no surprise that most gamers are male, but not by a wide margin. Men make up about 58 percent of gaming market. However, there are actually a lot more female gamers over 18 (37 percent) then boys under 17 (13 percent).
A few other interesting tidbits:
- 72 percent of American households play computer or video games
- 55 percent of gamers play games on their phones or handheld device
- Average number of years adult gamers have been playing computer or video games: 12
- 59 percent of parents believe that computer and video games provide more physical activity now than five years ago
- 45 percent of parents play computer and video games with their children at least weekly
- Total amount that consumers spent on games in 2010: $25.1 billion
