Epson’s Sub-$3K Projector Has 75,000:1 Contrast Ratio
The new Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 6500 UB promises a 1080p image from 3LCD D7 chipset.
January 08, 2009 | by Rachel Cericola

Budget no longer seems to be as big of a deal when it comes to buying a projector. Granted, the $3K Epson is asking for PowerLite Home Cinema 6500 UB isn’t peanuts, but it’s pretty sweet considering the specs.

First, the 3LCD unit offers 1080p, via a 3LCD D7 chipset. This is also what gives the unit a little extra push—and a 75,000:1 contrast ratio.

It also includes a Silicon Optix HQV Reon-VX processor, UltraBlack technology, brightness of up to 1,600 lumens, six color modes, and an improved airflow system, which makes things cool and quiet.

Another nice feature is the OptiCinema multi-lens system, which lets you adjust the lens by hand—up to 100 percent vertically or 50 percent horizontally. Connections include dual HDMI 1.3a digital inputs, as well as an S-Video, composite video, and VGA-type RGB input (D-sub 15).

The product is on Epson’s site now. However, if you try to buy, it takes you to nowheresville. Maybe that’s because the company says the unit won’t be available until later this month. Expect to pay about $2,999.
