Adding home security can be daunting—but also life saving. However, one company wants to make it a little less of a project, by using some of the equipment currently installed in your home.

Encore Controls Inc. recently announced something called the FireFighter. This is a little module that can turn any existing smoke detector into a monitored smart smoke detector.

It’s a little more complicated than it sounds. It’s actually designed for use with Honeywell or 2GIG control panels. Once an alarm is triggered, the FireFighter sends a wireless signal right to the control panel, which then alerts the central monitoring station. If all of the smoke detectors are hardwired, only one FireFighter is needed for the entire house.

The FireFighter is available now though NorthStar Alarm Services. Given that it’s both easy and cost-effective, the company expects it to be a popualr product.

“After extensive research, we found that the FireFighter is the most affordable and convenient way for anyone to have the extra peace of mind that comes with monitored services,” said Jason Christensen, president of NorthStar. “We are excited to offer the FireFighter and believe it has ability to save homes and families.”

In addition to alerting emergency services, users can set up Honeywell’s Total Connect app to send text messages once an alarm is detected.
